About AppSwap
A free mutual testing exchange for indie Android developers.
What AppSwap is
AppSwap is a platform where indie Android developers test each other's apps. You test someone's app and earn a credit. That credit brings one tester to your own Google Play closed testing track. No money changes hands. No cold DMs. Just a structured queue where everyone gets what they need.
The platform exists because every indie Android developer hits the same wall: Google Play requires 12 active testers for 14 consecutive days before a personal developer account can publish publicly. Finding those 12 people — and keeping them active — is harder than building the app itself.
How it works
- Sign up and add your app. Enter your app name, Google Group URL, and the opt-in link from Google Play Console. This is the information testers need to join your closed test.
- Test other developers' apps. Browse available testing tasks, pick one, and follow the steps: join their Google Group, click the opt-in link on your Android phone, install the app, and submit a screenshot as proof.
- Earn a credit. When the developer approves your proof, you receive one credit.
- Get a tester for your app. Your app enters the queue. Other developers test your app to earn their own credits. Each one who completes the task and gets approved becomes an active tester on your closed track.
Why testers actually follow through
The main problem with recruiting testers from Reddit or personal contacts is that they have no real reason to complete all the steps. They're doing you a favor, and favors get deprioritized when life gets busy.
On AppSwap, testers are developers who need testers themselves. When they test your app, they earn a credit that brings someone to their app. This creates a direct incentive loop: completing the task is how they make progress on their own launch.
In practice, this means AppSwap testers complete all required steps — joining the Google Group, clicking the opt-in link on Android, installing the app — at a much higher rate than testers recruited through other channels.
Key facts
- Free. No subscription, no per-tester fee, no paid tier.
- Android only. Built specifically for the Google Play closed testing requirement.
- Credit-based. One completed test = one credit = one tester for your app.
- Proof required. Testers submit a screenshot showing the app installed. Developers approve before credits are issued.
- Dispute resolution. If a developer rejects a valid submission, testers can appeal. A moderator reviews the evidence.
- Typical time to 12 testers: 2–5 days for active participants.
Who it's for
AppSwap is built for solo indie developers and small teams who are publishing their first (or next) Android app on Google Play. It's particularly useful for developers who don't have a large personal network to recruit testers from and don't want to spend $300+ on Fiverr or Upwork for 12 testers.
If you're building an app and need to complete Google Play's closed testing requirement, AppSwap is the fastest free path to 12 active testers.
Frequently asked questions
Does testing other people's apps require me to keep them installed?
No. Once you've submitted your proof screenshot and received your credit, you can uninstall the app. The point is to complete the opt-in steps so the developer counts you as an active tester for their 14-day period.
What if a developer rejects my proof unfairly?
You can file a dispute. A moderator will review the screenshot you submitted and the developer's reason for rejection. If the moderator rules in your favor, you receive your credit and can resubmit to a different app.
Can I use AppSwap if my app is in closed testing already?
Yes. As long as your closed testing track is live and your opt-in link works, you can add your app to AppSwap at any point during the process — even if you've already started the 14-day counter with some testers.
What happens if a tester opts out before my 14 days are up?
If a tester drops out and your active count falls below 12, Google resets your 14-day counter. You'd need a replacement tester. AppSwap makes this easier — you can earn another credit by testing an app and use it to bring in a new tester quickly.
Does AppSwap work for open testing or internal testing?
AppSwap is designed for closed testing — the track that counts toward Google Play's production access requirement. Open testing and internal testing have different mechanics and don't require the same opt-in process.
